Europe 2008 : A great opportunity came my way allowing me to go to several European countries over a brief 2-week period. This opportunity took me to Belgium, Norway, Sweden, England, Germany and Greece. These are pictures from the brief periods of free time during that trip.

Greenland from above : These are pictures of Greenland taken out the airliner window on my flight back from England in August of 2002. I was very fortunate that day the skies above Greenland were clear giving me this great view of the fjords, icebergs and snowcapped mountains of Greenland for the several minutes we flew over. Thanks to this great opportunity, if I never see the frozen terrain of Greenland again that's fine with me.

Ireland 2002 : In 2002, I fulfilled a lifelong dream of traveling thru Ireland and the UK. These are the pictures of the Ireland portion of the tour.

Spent 8 days incountry as part of a bus tour with CIE Tours International.

Route of travel was arrival in Shannon, thru Bunratty, Limerick, Killarney and the Ring of Kerry, along the south coast to Glendalough, Waterford, Dublin and then on up into British Northern Ireland to Belfast.

Ireland is full of great culture, music, architecture, pubs full of Guiness and all brands of Irish whiskey, and truly warm and wonderful people. In the history of America, so many Irish emigrated to America that when people in the pubs found out we were Yanks, it wasn't uncommon for us to get invited to "sit and have a pint" like we were their long-lost cousins or something.

These pics were done with a Canon film Rebel, the prints edited with Photoshop Elements and scanned in for your viewing pleasure here.

Scotland 2002 : In 2002, I fulfilled a lifelong dream of traveling thru Ireland and the UK. These are the pictures of the Scotland portion of the tour. Spent several days incountry as part of a bus tour with CIE Tours International.

We sailed across the Irish Sea from Northern Ireland and entered the UK SW of Glasgow, Scotland. We then proceeded to Glasgow for a driving tour and an overnight stay. Then we proceded on up to Inverness for an overnight with a cruise on Loch Ness looking for the monster. Then it was down to Edinburgh for a few days then on south into England. Scotland was full of pretty topography and old world-looking cities, awesome architecture, bagpipes, kilts and very friendly people.

Puerto Rico : My travels have taken me to Puerto Rico 3 times; once in 1989 not long after Hurricane Hugo and then again twice in late 2003. Puerto Rico is - in my humble opinion - "La Isla Bonita" or "The Beautiful Island." Lush, green & tropical full of old world architecture, culture and cuisine.

Right now I'm scanning all my prints of my PR visits into digital format for posting. For now, I'm storing them on here as a backup copy. Eventually, I will trim this gallery down to just a "Highlights" gallery of the more striking pics, etc.

PR is a US commonwealth, but Spanish is the language & heritage of the island. Interesting how even in San Juan, many people you meet are not fluent in English, so a working knowledge of Spanish is handy.

No visit to PR is complete without visiting Fort (Castillo) Felipe El Morro at the mouth of San Juan harbor. What a historical/architectural treasure! This stone fort was built in 1539 before laser levels, diamond-tipped saw blades, water cutters or any other "precision" tools. Granted, it's seen some TLC particularly of late under the US Park Service, but still it's in awesome shape; it's only threat being the erosion of the shoreline out from underneath it. Very picturesque, historical, etc & well worth a visit. The uniform pictures you see in this gallery are of the various occupying armies of El Morro.

Just outside the castle walls of El Morro lies Old San Juan. Again, this is a very picturesque historical/architectural/cultural area & worth a visit. Many cantinas offering good food & drink abound in the area and the crown of the area is the beautiful San Juan Cathedral.

You'll notice some pictures of wrought iron gates, fences, window barriers etc in this gallery. The unfortunately high crime rate in San Juan is behind all these security devices - even on balconies several stories above the street! It's quite ornamental looking and some places even have spikes or razors installed atop the highest "bar" to discourage climbers. My first visit to PR was a business trip & I was fortunate to visit the homes of local islanders for dinner etc. On these visits, I noticed that the hallways to the bedrooms often had wrought iron gates to close off that section of the house. I was given some interesting reasons behind why those doors exist.

Puerto Rico - la isla bonita - is a great place to visit! I hope to return again someday for yet another visit.

Caribbean Cruise : In 2003 - while cruise prices were still really low from 9/11/01 - my dad & I took 1 last father-son adventure & went on a caribbean cruise together. Our cruise ship departed San Juan, PR & visited St Thomas USVI, Basseterre St Kitts, St George's Grenada & Oranjestad Aruba. (We WERE supposed to visit Caracas, Venezuela, but there had been a coup attempt earlier in the year, so we were denied our ability to set foot on South America on this cruise.) We spent 7 days aboard the ship and it was awesome!

(Right now, I'm just storing all the pics from the trip on here as I scan them in. Eventually, I'll pare this gallery down to more of a "highlights" gallery.)

Canada : Several times in my life, I've been blessed to have business trips to Canada. The Canadian provinces and cities visited to date are Ottawa in Ontario and MOntreal and Quebec City in Quebec. The Canadians I've encountered on these trips have always been very friendly, hospitable people. If one tries the least little bit to speak to the French Canadians in even the most basic attempt at French, they are usually quite accomodating to those not fluent in French. In addition to the great people, Canada has some absolutely awe-inspiring architecture quite often in historic places like Parliament or the historical districts. One of my dream trips would be to travel across Canada from BC to Nova Scotia (or vice versa) in the summertime. Doing so by rail and stopping off wherever seemed appealing would be a most enjoyable trip, I would think.

Kansas Underground Salt Mine Museum Tour 2007 : What an amazing place! This was a way cool place to see. It is located just outside of Hutchinson, Ks. Thanks to Wichita State University's Society of Public Historians group, we toured this still active salt mine - 650 ft underground - that now also houses a huge underground storage facility & museum. You can visit their website at http://www.undergroundmuseum.org/index.php for more info.

Washington, D.C. : Highlights of 2 trips to Washington DC - 1 in 2004 and another in 2008.

What an exhilarating experience it is to be in our great nation's capitol. I've been there 3 times in my life and each time is as inspiring as the others. Though I may get disgusted and frustrated from time to time with the gentlemen and ladies running our government, it is still exciting to be in the seat of the greatest form of government in the world. God bless America.

Arizona trail ride 2009 : These are snapshots taken during a 2-hour trail ride in the Sonora Desert/Tonto National Forest NE of Phoenix, AZ in May, 2009. Such beautifully exotic plant life and geology make up the scenery out there. The company giving the ride is Cave Creek Outfitters. Our horses were very patient mounts for 2 very novice riders. My wife's horse was named Rojas and mine was Matt.
