Highlights of a coastal Carolinas vacation spent traveling from Wilmington, NC thru Myrtle Beach, Georgtown, Beaufort and Charleston, SC & finishing up in Savannah, GA. The blue crab, beautiful low country sights, food and great people made for a wonderful vacation. We really fell in love with the low country and especially Beaufort & Charleston, SC.
In Victorian times, it was considered very risque & racy for a woman to show her ankles. So to prevent such a display when a lady was getting out of a carriage, she would step from the carriage onto one of these carriage stones, her large hoop dress would then flow down over her feet covering her ankles the whole time and she would then step onto the street under cover of her dress.
